Thank you to everyone that made it to the YULA Ultimate Parent Information Meeting for the High School division last night. We appreciate you taking the time out of your busy week to learn about our plans for the Spring Season. And, we really appreciate your enthusiasm and your support for your kids playing youth Ultimate!
For those that may have missed the meeting, we started with a general overview presentation in the auditorium and then we broke up into individual team meetings with the high school team coaches.
The slides for the overview presentation are in the slideshow above (click on the arrows to advance), and below is a (poorly filmed) video of the live presentation.
And here's the Yorktown 2016 Spring Season "Hype Video" that we opened with...

Interested in indoor Ultimate clinics for Middle School players?
Registration is closed.
These clinics are aimed to teach any middle schoolers (girls, boys, all levels) living in the DC area to learn to play spirited Ultimate and prepare them for the spring season. Each clinic will be run by experienced high school ultimate players and Ultimate Peace (UP)* Ambassadors in partnership with YULA. This is a clinic series where each clinic will provide a new set of skills as well as provide playing opportunities for players to focus on control and technique. The clinics are held in the Yorktown Auxiliary Gym at Yorktown High School in Arlington on the following Sunday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm: January 15th, 29th and February 12th, 26th 2017.
* Profits will go to supporting Ultimate Peace's efforts to promote peace in the Middle East by bringing Ultimate to Arab, Jewish and Palestinian youth.

Hi, Arlington Youth Ultimate family,
We know you have been anxiously waiting to hear the latest on what will be happening with regard to youth Ultimate here in Arlington this fall. This is an update with what we know today.
APS Fall Ultimate (some dates and details still being finalized)
YULA Fall Ultimate
YULA Registration and Dues
As we stated earlier, YULA will continue to organize “club” teams that will look just like our YULA teams in the past. So, many (or all) of the kids that play on an APS high school team might also play on the same YULA club team which may or may not be named after their high school. These YULA club teams will then be able to travel to regional tournaments with YULA’s help just as they have in the past.
We have worked hard to design a YULA program that will both augment and support the APS Ultimate initiative during this initial learning curve and first year as an official sport. We are excited to help APS bring the joy of Ultimate to many new youth in Arlington!
The YULA Board
Hi, Arlington Youth Ultimate players, parents, friends and fans!
We have some exciting news to share with you regarding youth ultimate in Arlington! Arlington Public Schools is poised to become one of the few, leading-edge school systems in the nation to adopt Ultimate Frisbee as an official school sport!
On July 20th, at the APS School Board meeting, the APS Director of Secondary Instruction, Tyrone Byrd, delivered a proposal to the School Board to adopt Ultimate as an APS sport. The School Board will vote on the proposal on August 18th and already has plans to execute on the proposal with an inaugural season for APS Ultimate being this fall 2016. Of important note is that the Superintendent, Dr. Patrick Murphy, is recommending that the proposal be adopted thanks, in part, to the great evangelism and education efforts by many in the YULA organization and extended YULA family including current school board members Barbara Kanninen and Reid Goldstein.
The APS Plan for High School Ultimate:
While some details are still being ironed out and things could change, here is what we know about the APS high school Ultimate plan at this point:
The APS Plan for Middle School Ultimate:
Here is what we know about the APS middle school Ultimate plan at this point:
What about YULA?
YULA is not going away. YULA will serve as a “club” organization similar to the Arlington Soccer Association.
YULA will continue to organize “club” teams that will look just like our YULA teams in the past. So, many (or all) of the kids that play on an APS high school team might also play on the same YULA club team which may or may not be named after their high school. Clear as mud?
Note that due to an APS rule, the APS high school teams cannot have the same coach as the YULA club high school team for the same school. So we may play some mix and match with coaches this first year. For returning coaches, we will make sure that they serve as the official coach for the YULA club team that they worked with last year.
These YULA club teams will then be able to travel to regional tournaments with YULA’s help just as they have in the past.
For this year, YULA will operate a fall program which will augment the APS program. While things may be adjusted if the APS program changes materially, here is what we are planning for the YULA Fall 2016 program (again, things may change):
YULA FALL 2016 High School Program
YULA FALL 2016 Middle School Program (Updated 28 July 2016)
YULA SPRING 2017 High School Program
YULA SPRING 2017 Middle School Program
We view this initiative by APS as a GREAT thing for youth Ultimate in Arlington! Having APS adopt and promote Ultimate will be a great way to grow the sport. APS Athletic Directors will be actively recruiting kids to come out and play Ultimate! How great is that? Down the road, this will lead to better competition and more Ultimate fun within Arlington and within the region.
Please bear with us as we sort out the details along with APS and let’s do everything we can to help them have a successful inaugural season of Ultimate!
And remember the final School Board vote is on August 18, so keep your fingers crossed.
Southerns - 5 YULA teams will be competing in the USA Ultimate (USAU) Southern Regional High School Championship tournament in Atlanta, Georgia on May 14 and 15.
